End of Our Smartypig Trial
Written by HIS on May 29, 2008 – 4:16 pm -As you had read before, we had set up a Smartypig account recently. I like the idea of it. I think the extra money from retail stores is really great for when you already have a specific item already in mind. However, if you change your mind or an emergency comes up, then you are stuck as the funds are not liquid.
Smartypig has stated that at some point they are going to allow you to EFT the funds back into the account from which you originally funded from. This was not the case when I went to close my account on 15 May. I was planning on getting Amazon gift cards as there is a speaker set that I’ve been saving for there. The process was easy and I was notified that any extra funds left over from the gift card purchase (they only allowed $25 increments) would be funded into an electronic Smartypig gift card that I could put towards my other savings goal. That’s a nice feature.
My big complaint is that it supposedly will take 7-10 business days to get me a gift card! If they are indeed partnered with these companies, it should only take 1-2 business days to get the card in the mail to me. As of now I have not received the card. Now granted, we moved and the mail is forwarding so I will check the postmark when it comes but it’s disappointing.
In the future I’ll be forgoing Smartypig and just creating sub-accounts with ING. It will be slightly less return but it’s worth it for less headaches in using my money.

Joint Budget
Written by HERS on May 29, 2008 – 1:33 am -Everyone in the personal finance blogosphere has a budget or has written about budgeting many times so I’m sure this isn’t a new concept to anyone reading this. For us here at HisHersMoney this is the first time we are working on a joint budget.
This is really just our first cut at things and I’m sure there are many places we could really trim the fat. A few things I would like to point out:
- We have given ourselves $100 a week as our own money. Each can do whatever they would like with their money no questions asked. But when it’s gone, it’s gone. If there’s something we want and it costs over $100 then it will require a little saving.
- For instance, in July I (Hers) plan on going to the beach for a long weekend with some girlfriends. The costs will include the shared hotel room, gas, food and entertainment. I will need to continue to save up over the next month to cover my trip expenses.
- There’s no credit card usage. (Nothing else to really say here)
- Not counting the cars we have roughly $15k in debt. I’ll do an exact calculation and payment plan in a few days. We currently have $1100 a month budgeted to go towards this. I expect that we should be able to pay more each month by cutting back in some other areas but I know that at least this minimum amount is budgeted.
- Both cars are scheduled to be paid off within a year and a half so we are most likely going to let that debt and payments ride it’s course. The interest rates are decent on them and we have absolutely no intentions of buying any new vehicles at this point.
- Her monthly income shown is after a $1200/month 401k contribution
- This should easily increase our net worth by about $55,000 over the next year. Good yes, but not great, not exceptional, not on track to being where I would like to be……
So, the basics are shown below. We welcome and feedback, questions or comments you might have as we work to refine out budget. I will be doing a follow up post on the savings part which we did some updates on as a result of a recent financial advisor visit (yes I found a new advisor)as well as a post regarding an updated debt summary which we really need to look at ourselves.

Huge Warehouse Club Stock Up Trip
Written by HERS on May 22, 2008 – 12:33 am -This week we made a huge runs to the warehouse club, Costco is our favorite but we went to BJs this time (free guest pass), and stocked up on a household items and food items that we needed. BJs is great becuase you can combine the club discounts, club coupons and manufacturers coupons.
When I say we made a huge run I wasn’t kidding. Our bill was $175 and that was after $50 in coupons! So what did we get for all o four hard earned dough? Toilet paper, crystal light, chicken, BBQ sauce, mayo, goldfish snacks, italian sausage, wine, breakfast smoothies, laundry soap, fabric softener, cat food… all sorts of things.
We have been preparing to move into our new apartment (more to come later on this) so we have really been careful to just buy the minimum and use up everything we have. When it comes to things like toilet paper and laundry soap I don’t like having to wonder if I have enough or do I need to buy more this week so I generally buy it in bulk and get it over with. Most of the warehouse clubs send out coupons every so often so I usually stock up then.
There has been a lot of debate as to whether the membership fees that the warehouse clubs charge are worth it. For us it really wasn’t even a matter of it being worth while or not, it was a matter of convenience. We live in a high rise that is literally right next door to a Costco. We will walk over there for just one item some times. I think over an entire year we could possibly claim that by being able to walk next door to shop instead of driving a few miles away to the grocery store and spending money on gas that we mitigate the cost of the membership even without taking any actual discounts into account.
What is your opinion of the warehouse clubs and the membership fees that they charge?

Coupons - Not So Extreme Edition
Written by HERS on May 21, 2008 – 3:39 am -After reading a couple articles about Crissy Thompson, the Coupon Queen I can honestly saw that I am in awe. This woman spends like $10 on a week’s worth of groceries for her family of five, not one but five. It seems that I can’t even get by with $10 a day for the two of us let alone for a week.
Basically Crissy spends about an hour each week combing through the grocery store fliers and clipping coupons from four Sunday papers. She only cuts the coupons for items that she uses and combines them with the current sales items. After reading the article about Crissy and her extreme couponing I did learn a few great tips and facts that I didn’t know about.
My favorite tip is that you can use one coupon for each item you purchase. If there is a buy 1 get 1 free sale you can use a coupon on both of the items. I think the key here is to get multiple papers and/or have a good stash of coupons so that you do end up with multiple coupons for the items.
I don’t buy multiple papers each week but every once in awhile I do end up with two sets of coupons. I live in a high rise and one of my neighbors puts their Sunday paper in a pile outside the trash room on my floor to be recycled and if I see it I’ll grab the coupons books out of it.
I do try to keep an eye on the sales and what coupons I have. We actually got about $30 worth of groceries for $16 this weekend when we combined the sales and coupons. This isn’t nearly as good as Crissy does but it’s not too shabby.
Do you use coupons? Are you embarrassed using them or too embarrassed to use them?

Woo Hoo, A Student Loan Paid Off!
Written by HERS on May 14, 2008 – 3:02 am -Well, the remaining balance was only $311 but it felt so good when I made the last payment online today it felt so good. I had the payments set up to debit out of my checking account automatically each month which made it really easy to avoid any late payments or missed payments. Unfortunately having the payment taken out each month automatically also makes it hard to make extra payments since you aren’t making a manual payment each month.
The key for me was having online access to my account where I could make extra payments online easily and quickly. Every once in awhile I would go online to check my balance and would be compelled to make some sort of extra payment while I was one there.
So, in the last few months I have been making payments in excess of $300 and now it’s GONE!!!! One down and three to go! So the most important things to do:
1. Set up your payments automatically, even one late or missed payment can negate a entire month’s payment.
2. Set up online access to your account to view it at all times.
3. Log on online and view it often, while you’re there make an extra payment!

How I’m Going to Stimulate the Economy
Written by HIS on May 11, 2008 – 11:16 am -Like so many other people now I have received my stimulus check. Unlike Hers, I apparently don’t make too much money in the eyes of the government and got the full $600. Also unlike Hers, I plan on actually going out and using that money to have some fun!
You see, I have another large financial windfall that just finally came in as well. Ninety percent or so of that is going straight towards my credit card debt and will pay off between 65-70% of it. With some other additional income that I’ll be receiving from now through July, I will pay off my credit cards completely! That will leave me less than $8,000 in debt with just under $5,000 on my car loan, which we are seriously considering selling and living with one car.
This is also the first year that I’m planning on fully funding a Roth IRA or doing any real retirement investing. So Hers has obviously gotten me on the straight and narrow path towards financial independence. It’s great that we’re going on this journey together and I can’t wait to see where it ends up. I’m sure we’ll have a big post up soon as we’re about to go ahead and combine the checking accounts and bills, which obviously is a big step and also a pain in the rear.
So back to this extra check from the government. What am I doing with it? I’m going to Atlantic City and playing poker, blackjack, and any other game that I feel like at the time with a buddy who’s moving away very shortly! If I come back with money still in my pocket, then it will go straight into the emergency fund. I’m guessing that there are many PF bloggers out there who shudder at the thought of just ‘throwing’ that money away. I consider it entertainment with a great friend.
I’m actually a pretty decent poker player. Hers doesn’t like me playing that often and I respect her wishes, realizing I was risking too much when I had as much debt as I did. I just want to point out that poker is a game of skill and I actually made an extra $12,000 (yes I claimed it on my taxes) in 2006 from playing online. In the future I will discuss how people that like to play poker can do so without risking debt and going broke through what is called bankroll management. It’s sound money advice that I think most of you will get the idea behind right away.
